Report To Coroner After Surfies Point Drowning,Declared One Man Dead
Phillip Island has been struck with yet another heartbreaking tragedy as a man in his 60s drowned at the popular ‘Surfies Point’ beach, near the corner of The Esplanade and Batman Street, Surf Beach. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, marking a tragic start to the summer season.
According to Senior Constable Mark Stapleton, who attended the scene, the man was found unresponsive in the water after reportedly surfing at the location. Despite the efforts of nearby surfers and beachgoers who brought him ashore and performed CPR, he could not be revived. Emergency services, including road ambulances, paramedics, and the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), responded to the scene, but the man was declared dead.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious, though the cause remains unclear, and police will prepare a report for the coroner. It’s possible the man may have experienced a medical episode, but further investigation will be required to determine the exact circumstances.
Bass Coast Mayor Cr Rochelle Halstead expressed her condolences to the man’s family and acknowledged the efforts of first responders and bystanders. This tragedy follows a series of fatal drownings in the region, which has raised concerns about beach safety.
